529 College Saving

If you are looking for a great way to start saving for college for your loved one, you may want to think about starting a 529 college saving plan. However, before you jump right into one of these plans, you have to know all about it. Sure, you can read about it all day long on the internet, but you may still not going to know everything that you should know to make a great choice.  That is mainly because these types of plans change from place to place. Each state has their own plan, and that means that you are going to have to read about each plan to see which one is right for you. The best thing to do is ask questions about these plans to figure out what is right for you. However, if you do not know much about these plans, how do you know what kind of questions to ask? Well that is why I am here to help you out. I will give you a small list of questions that you may want to ask before you start up a 529 plan.

First things first, you are going to want to know if the plan is available directly from the state or from a plan sponsor. Next, you are going to want to know what kind of investment options are going to be offered to you with this plan. With that, you are also going to want to know how long your contributions are going to be held before they are invested. From this point on, I would also think that it would be a good idea to ask what the plan's withdrawal restrictions are. This way you know what kind of expenses are going to be covered by this plan, and you will know for what reasons you can withdrawal your money. It could also be a good idea to ask what colleges and universities participate in this plan. As you can see, there are many questions that you can ask, and depending on the answers to these questions, you are going to be able to make a good choice. However, we have just broken the top of the surface of the questions you may want to ask.

The next question you are going to want to ask is a big one. You are going to want to ask what kind of fees are going to be charged to your plan. You see, the fees are the major drawback to the 529 plans. You do get a lot of tax breaks with these types of plans, but the fees sometimes take up all the profit of that. This is why you should also ask under what circumstances are the fees waived or reduced, if any. It could also be worth your time to ask if there are any special benefits for being a state resident. A lot of these plans you can open up no matter what state you live in, but sometimes they will give you special treatment if you open it up in the same state you live in. The next big question is what kind of limitation applies to the plan. A lot of the time, these plans can have withdrawal limitations, or age limitations, that you are going to want to know about. Last but not least, you are going to want to know who the program manager is, and how to get hold of them. You are also going to want to know when their contract expires. As soon as you ask these questions, this place is going to know that you mean business.

There are a lot of different plans that you can look into, so you do not have to jump on the first one you see. If you hold out a bit, you are going to be able to find a plan that has very few limitation, and does not have a lot of fees that go with it. This is a great feeling when you finally find the plan that is right for you. So go out there, and start looking for the plan that you want to use. I am sure that you are going to find the perfect plan for you and your beneficiary to use. After all, this is your higher education we are talking about. You can afford to spend a little bit of time looking into the different plans.
